By late2006, so much of her small intestine had to be removed that the medical team felt only one, rather risky solution remained: a small bowel transplant. The nasty bacterium responsible is a one-celled microscopic organism that kills by causing an infection in the small intestine. The scientists also homed in on a potential mechanism: the activity of a gene responsible for helping the small intestine absorb salt and secrete bicarbonate.
