“白宫”是美国首都华盛顿的总统府和政府的行政机关所在地。但“白宫”的名字是怎么来的呢？这要追溯到1812年。当时英国正同美国交战，英军占领了华盛顿，放火烧掉了一些房子，其中包括美国国会大厦和总统府。1814年，为了掩盖火烧留下的耻辱的痕迹，总统府的褐色石墙被涂成了白色。从此，“白宫”the White House就叫了起来。
