fear是个广义词,指内在的害怕心理; dread指由于预知某一不愉快或令人惊惧的事要发生而带来的恐惧或由于预料到危险即将来临而产生的恐惧; alarm指由于危险的突然出现而产生的惊慌失措的恐惧; terror指因受到外界刺激而产生的恐惧心理。例如:

这两个词都是“害怕”的意思。其区别是:

1.afraid 是形容词, fear是动词也可作名词。be afraid of=fear, be afraid of v -ing = fear to- v 。例如:

I fear offending him.〔I am afraid of offending him.〕我怕得罪他。
We are not afraid of difficulties.〔We fear no difficulty.〕我们不怕困难。

2.在非正式场合, be afraid of比fear常用得多。例如:

虽然Do you fear the dark?也是可以的,但是在口语里不大这么说。

fear的意思是“害怕”; 而fear for的意思是“为…担心”。例如:

这两个词都可表示“害怕”。其区别是:

fear作抽象名词时的意思是“害怕”“担心”“忧虑”,指内在害怕的心理。

fear表示“恐惧”“惧怕”时,可用作可数名词,也可用作不可数名词。 特指某种恐惧或多种恐惧时,可用作可数名词;表示“畏惧”时,是不可数名词。

fear表示“可能性”时,用作不可数名词,其后常接介词of短语。

fear后可接that引导的同位语从句。for fear that连接的从句总是虚拟的,并用肯定结构。

fear表示对某人或某事害怕,多指害怕已存在或即将到来的危险,并含有避开之义。其含义与be afraid of/to- v 基本相同,但fear常用作书面语,而be afraid of/to- v 为日常用语。

fear可用作及物动词,也可用作不及物动词。用作及物动词时,其宾语可以是名词、代词、动名词、动词不定式、that从句。fear还可接以动词不定式充当补足语的复合宾语。

fear在需要搭用非谓语动词时,用动名词和不定式短语都可以,意思上差别不大,只是接动词不定式多表示“不敢主动地去做某事”,而接动名词多表示“对某动作的后果被动地害怕”,另外,接动词不定式多表示“害怕要去做某事”,接动名词时则表示“做某事时害怕”。

fear用作不及物动词时其后接介词for,表示“为…担心”。

fear后可接so或not代替前面出现的肯定句或否定句中的宾语。

I fear, we fear在口语中可以用来表达说话人的情绪,常用来传达不好的消息,表示遗憾或使语气婉转,后常接that从句,也可以把I fear, we fear放在句末。这样用时, fear只能用于一般现在时,相当于I am afraid, we are afraid。

在新闻报道中, fear常用于被动结构。

fear通常不用于进行体。
